To protect Llys-y-frân and other bodies of water from harmful invasive species and aquatic diseases, all participants must follow biosecurity guidance before, during and after their water activity session.
Arrive with clean and dry kit and clothing.
Ensure wetsuits, swimwear, buoyancy aids, footwear, and towels have not been used in another waterbody without cleaning and drying.
Check pockets, zips, Velcro, laces, and hoods for mud, plants, or small organisms.
Use dedicated water footwear where possible.
Inform staff if you believe your equipment may be contaminated – this kit is then to be quarantined and addressed as necessary.
Equipment should be cleaned and dried for at least 48 hours before being used in different locations in line with the Check Clean Dry procedure below.
Enter the water only at designated access points.
Do not move equipment or flotation aids to areas not designated for water activities.
Avoid disturbing plants, animals and sediment.
Follow all staff instructions at all times.
Remove visible mud, plants, and debris from all equipment and clothing.
Wash all equipment and clothing thoroughly using hot water or disinfectant where possible. Pay attention to seams, folds, and Velcro. Showering after the session is highly recommended.
Dry everything completely before reuse, preferably for at least 48 hours. Do not store damp equipment.
Never transfer water, plants or animals to another site.
Do not empty water from bottles or equipment onto the ground.
Biosecurity applies even after short water contact.
Please note that use of cleaning agent is prohibited where run-off may enter the lake.
Llys-y-frân Lake is a designated site for both ecological and raw water protection. It is included in the Cleddau Rivers Special Area of Conservation and is a designated Safeguard Zone for water quality with relation to algae, nutrients, taste and odour.
Llys-y-frân provides raw water to the Preseli Water Treatment Works that serves over 117,000 customer properties.
Invasive non-native species and water-borne diseases can spread through water, mud and damp equipment. Once introduced, they are extremely difficult to remove and can cause serious damage to local wildlife, water quality, and recreational access.
By following this guidance, you help protect wildlife, safeguard water quality and keep Llys-y-frân open and safe for everyone. Thank you for doing your part.
